Obituary of Richard Keir Moore

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sodus: Entered into rest September 13, 2009 in his 73rd year. Richard “Dick” Moore is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 51 years, Suzanne Miner Moore; his sons Steven (Lisa) of Marion, and Jeremy (Danah) of Wappingers Falls; five grandchildren: Alexandria, Maddison, Jacob, Justin and Amanda; his sister, Virginia (George) Negus of Binghamton; nieces and nephews; and his special little pal “Gracie.” He is predeceased by parents Alice and Alexander Keir Moore, and his sister Patricia Montross. A life-long resident of Sodus, Dick became an Eagle Scout, played saxophone, participated in sports, loved math and graduated from high school in 1954. He attended Syracuse University, later earning his Bachelor of Science Degree from SUNY Cortland and his Master of Arts in Education from the University of Rochester. Dick taught in Lyons and Clyde before coming to Sodus in 1963. In his years at Sodus, he taught 7-12th grade math, was department chair, faculty association president, class advisor and Booster Club member. In 1989, he became the Business Administrator for Sodus Central School and retired in 1995. As a life-long member of First United Presbyterian Church, Dick served as elder, clerk of session, stewardship chairman and Geneva Presbytery finance chairman. Dick enjoyed singing bass in the church choir. Currently, Dick was serving as Board of Directors’ vice - president for Pines of Peace. During the 1990’s, he was treasurer for Sodus Youth Venture. For the past five years he and Sue were classroom volunteers at the Marion Elementary School. He also was a member of the Sodus Lions Club for several years. As a 1970 founding member of WCTA (Reliant Community Credit Union), Dick was elected in 1985 to the Board of Directors and served as Board Chairman since 1986. In August Dick was inducted into the New York State Credit Union Hall of Fame. The citizens of Sodus can attest to Dick’s love of running and his unique “head down” style. For thirty years, he gave a wave and a smile to those driving by as he trained on the streets and country roads of Sodus. Dick ran in ten Boston Marathons as well as the Marine Corps and Disney Marathons. He was no “fair weather” runner. During the hot days of summer, the rainy days of fall, or in a winter blizzard he could be found running his course - a man and a runner for all seasons. Dick will be remembered for his wry sense of humor, his love of music and running, his model train hobby, and his commitment to his church and community. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and family man who cherished the time he spent with his five grandchildren. Friendships, good times and laughter filled his life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 19 at 2:00 PM at First United Presbyterian Church of Sodus. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Presbyterian Church, 31 West Main St., Sodus, NY 14551 or to Pines of Peace, 2378 Ridge Rd., Ontario, NY 14519.
