Obituary of Donald C. Harris

Wolcott: Donald C. Harris passed away on his 90th birthday, June 15, 2010 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Born in Lyons to Elliot and Mabel Knobloch Harris, he grew up in Sodus Point where his parents ran The Harris House. Don was a talented athlete, playing soccer, basketball, and baseball for Sodus High. He played semi-pro baseball at age fifteen. He was an outstanding pitcher in the Border League, playing for Watertown and Auburn. He also played for the Sodus Point Chiefs and in the Old Timer League in Rochester. In later years he loved playing golf at Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club and The Monastery Golf Club in Orange City, FL where he made his winter home. Don retired as a tool and die maker from New Process Gear where he worked thirty-eight years. He and his brother-in-law, Jim Topping, were co-owners of Tops Grocery in Wolcott. Don married his grade-school sweetheart, Elizabeth (Betty) Topping, in 1942. She died in 1985. He is survived by his daughters, Donna (James) Gordon of Seneca, SC and Sandra (Robert) Reynolds of Wolcott with whom he resided. He is also survived by one grandson, Todd (Amy) Gordon of Stanley, NC and two great-granddaughters, Kali and Ashlyn Gordon. Calling hours will be held Thursday, June 17th at the Norton Funeral Home, 45 West Main Street, Sodus, NY from 6 – 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held Friday, June 18th at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home followed by interment at Sodus Rural Cemetery.
