RIP Tom. You were a good man. I spent a couple of years on the USCGC Snohomish with him. I'll never forget the time we were driving to Lewiston, ME and he saw a couple of goats on someones yard. He turned to me and said "Funniest lookin' dogs I ever saw..." Not many goats on the south side of Boston I guess.

Cheryl and family,
We and our families are so saddened by Tom’s passing. We are so glad that we met and became friends. Over the years there were so many fun times, travels, laughs, happy hours, cook outs, parties and the spontaneous gatherings that were so special because we were all part of it together. Tom’s a special person but we don’t have to tell you that! We will miss him so much. There will be a huge void in our future gatherings. He made us laugh and brightened our days when we saw him even when he was suffering. He certainly lived up to TOM STRONG! He will forever be in our hearts and memories.
Tom and I are so sorry that we are away and couldn’t be at the celebration of his life. We’ve heard from many how wonderful it was. I read that his funeral was a very emotional and beautiful service as well.
We’ll see you when we return to share our memories, love and tears.
Love,
Kathy & Tommy P.
We know he will be cheering on his beloved Patriots from above - go Pats!

I first remember meeting Tom in 2009 when he started working at Reliant. It took me a while to figure out who he was talking about when he said the names Bob and Barb because of his accent. The names almost sounded the same & I learned quickly to pay attention to the whole sentence to figure out if it was Bob or Barb that he was talking about. Tom made work worth coming in for some days. He was a great listener on bad days, gave advice that would get you through the day, and his sense of humor is unforgettable. We had many talks about both of us going through cancer. I remember saying how our birthdays have new meaning, to which he agreed - about making the most of every day. From a poem I once read and shard with Tom, “Live a Life That Matters”. “What will matter is not your memories but the memories that live on in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered and for what”. Tom’s life mattered, to a lot of people, including me. I was blessed to call him my friend, but more so that he called me his friend. My shared and deepest condolences to Tom’s entire family.

we may be far away distance wise, but our hearts are still in our home town and its people. I remember talking to Tom before he was diagnosed. He asked me many questions concerning symptoms of cancer. He took my advise and went very shortly after to the doctor. I m so sorry that speed didn't help. He is at peace now after a long battle. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family now and in the days to come.tE

Mr. Denehy...how I addressed him on the USCG Cutter Chase many moons ago. I have so many memories of him. I always referred to him as a "crusty sailor" because he did not take crap from anyone and always called you out when you weren't doing something right (even if it was right but maybe he just didn't like the way you were doing it). He pushed me to always try harder and to never give up on what I wanted in life. I just mentioned him the other day during a leadership speech I had to write.
One quick story that I will never forget was on my 6th attempt (I hate taking tests) to pass the Navigational Rules of the Road...he stood over me and handed me an entire bag of Hershey's kisses and told me if I started to get stressed out to eat a piece of chocolate. Needless to say, I ate the entire bag during that test but I did finally pass the damn thing.
RIP my friend...

Tom is the sailor that we all aspired to be. If you were lucky enough for him to call you his friend it stuck for life. A hard-ass chief that I would sail into hell with and expect to get out the other side with being a devil himself. He's a Chief from the old school that years ago honed my respect for those the back-bone of the guard as surly as they might be at times. As a deckplate sailor, you either loved the the guy or maybe not.
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
I'll see you someday my friend when I cross the bar.

Tom and Cheryl blazed an amazing trail of cancer fighting for Jack and I to follow once we joined a similar battle. Thank you for courage, your leadership, your fighting spirit. We are blessed to have known you in the good old days in Sodus Point, hanging out at Papa Joe's, doing parties and weddings, busting on each other's accents, bashing the Red Sox and the Yankees and the Bills and the Patriots.
We are shocked and saddened beyond comprehension to lose our fellow brother in arms at this time. We hold you all close in our hearts as we cry and remember the many many great times we shared with the one of kind, amazing, joyful Tom Denehy.
